Is there a vaccine for the Bird Flu virus?
There are currently no commercially available vaccines that will protect people against the H5N1 Avian Flu.
Currently many countries are trying to develop one. Many health organisations are working to make sure access is gained as quickly as possible to a vaccine once it is developed and available.
From the onset of an flu pandemic it may take up to six months for a vaccine to be developed and made in sufficient quantities.
What should I do if there is a Bird flu Pandemic?
Until such time as a Bird Flu Vaccine has been developed and is made commercially available, the only prudent approach to your own health and well being, and that of your family, is one of care and prevention.
There are medications such as Tamiflu and Relenza that might help to prevent catching the H5N1 Bird Flu virus but this has yet to be conclusively proved. What Tamiflu and Relenza will do is inhibit the growth of the Influenza A type virus in the human body and taking one or other of these medications may inhibit and prevent the growth of the Bird Flu virus before the secondary and more serious complications take place. It is these secondary complications such as Pneumonia and breathing difficulties that can cause eventual death.
Tamiflu or Oseltamivir is used to treat some types of influenza (flu) in patients who have had symptoms of the flu for two days or less. Tamiflu is in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. These drugs work by stopping the growth and spread of the Bird Flu virus in your body. Tamiflu helps shorten the time you have flu symptoms like nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, tiredness, headache, fever and chills.
